Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire. It takes its name from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. It has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base.
During the 19th century, Sheffield gained international reputation for steel production. Many innovations were developed locally, including stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in population during the Industrial Revolution.
Sheffield is geographically diverse. The city nestles in a natural amphitheatre, created by hills and the confluence of five rivers. Much of the city is built on hillsides with views into the city centre or out to the countryside.
Sheffield is made up of numerous suburbs, many of which developed from villages or hamlets that were absorbed into Sheffield as the city grew.
Sheffield is linked into the national motorway network via the M1 and M18; linking it with London to the south and Leeds to the north.
