Stoke Newington is a district in the London Borough of Hackney. It is 5 miles (8 km) north-east of Charing Cross. It can be roughly defined as the N16 postal code area.
For one small district, Stoke Newington is endowed with a generous amount of open space. To its north, there is the extensive West Reservoir, now a non-working facility, but open for leisure and surrounded by green space, at the entrance to which is the Castle Climbing Centre.
On Saturday mornings, St Paul's churchyard in Stoke Newington High Street hosts an active farmers' market. In addition Stoke Newington is well known for its good pubs and bars and a lively music scene, including contemporary Jazz and open mic comedy sessions.
