Thirsk is a traditional market town and civil parish in the Vale of Mowbray, North Yorkshire. It is famous for its race course, 15th Century Church and professional cricketer Thomas Lord. Thirsk is also the Darrowby of the late James Herriot, famous vet and author. His house and surgery has now been converted into the 'World of James Herriot' which is an award winning Museum and Visitor Attraction. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is to the west and the North York Moors National Park is to the east. Thirsk is about 35km north-west of York. The estimated population of Thirsk in 2001 was 4460.
Market days are Mondays and Saturdays when the south side of the Market Place has a variety of stalls selling everything from fruit and vegetables, candles, computer games to health food, clothing and hardware. On most bank holiday Mondays the whole market place is almost filled by stalls and the town really comes alive. The town clock dominates the cobbled market square and many of the shops retain their original frontages.
